Pathetic fallacy, assigning human characteristics to inanimate objects or animals, beats at the record’s heart, too. “That sort of intersects with this idea of sacred math. “I’m so fascinated by fruit in the way it’s organized, and how colorful it is, and the fact that these things just exist outside,” she adds. I became curious about what would happen if I really leaned into it and even repeated some of my lyrics from prior songs.” A guitar in tow, Wellbaum freestyled lyrics for a bit, ironing out the details of structure, when she “noticed that a lot of the words I was saying played on similar visuals and iconography that we’ve used before. I’m stuck on the reasons why, she laments, letting the past’s sorrows forever linger. With finger-picked acoustic guitar chords, “A Giant Swallow,” written last year, arose as another transcendent experience. I have this sensory experience of it feeling like a still image that’s finally come into full focus and is ready to be looked at by someone else.” Like a lightning flash, the song “showed up in my mind. “Despite being sick, I felt amazing and really connected,” she recalls. When the band set their sights on climbing to the top, Wellbaum, who was “incredibly sick” at the time, decided to stay behind on a plateau mid-way up. Perched over the town of Edinburgh, Arthur’s Seat, an ancient volcano, possesses an irresistible allure. “It’s funny how time is never enough,” Wellbaum regards with the opening line of “King Arthur’s Seat,” written while in Scotland after a headlining tour. Superb.Wellbaum and her bandmates─Kyle Bann (bass) and Will Gorin (drums)─nosedive into such reveries across 10 songs on the album. She gets us into her mind where rainbows and moths are creating together, or at least create what inspire her. We let Leah Wellbaum lead the way with her vocals and guitar happily. Then, slowly, we’re sliding towards radio-able melodies, vaporous, chill and sometimes a touch epic too. Once More For The Ocean and The Next Curse’s tough riffs are a punch in the throat. Cranium is a dark softness that grasps us completely. Slothrust’s new record, Parallel Timeline, is a virtuoso journey that, from garage rock, evolves to pop music with both ease and great logic. Hertz is our favourite here, with its free spirit, and Choices resonates like the ultimate feminist hymn. The tracks are short but invite us to let our inner world shine ( Freaks to the Front, Maggot). We’re on it, in technicolour and in hardcore mode. The strength of their new album Comfort To Me is that they’re bringing live energy inside our home. Well, it’s not a garage, it’s our living room. Expect that it’s not a club, it’s a garage. The club’s walls smell like sticky beer, and on stage Amyl and The Sniffers are giving it their all. We’ll definitely put it on repeat for some days. Impossible to stay put when we get to those thrilling chords and catchy choruses. If some tracks are calming us down by the end of the record, Peoples’ Republic Of Desire and Headphones Baby that are winning us over. Their new album, Back In Love City, proposes a cure to the reigning fatigue that the pandemic is imposing on us, still. With a love letter addressed to the States ( Back In love City, Heart Land, El Paso), the British band The Vaccinesfires us up with some catchy riffs. We’re already warming up for the next mosh-pit we’ll see! Flashes. What a week! We got treats upon treats and we can assure you our dancefloor playlist is filling up with rock music. Monday, J12:00 AM By Deirdre Carroll: Senior Editor Native to China, tree peonies were valued as a medicinal plant long before they were adored ornamentals. Itoh peonies are a hybrid cross between herbaceous peonies and tree peonies, they do die back to the ground in fall like herbaceous peonies but their flower and growth characteristics are similar to tree peonies. They lose their foliage in the fall but their woody stems do not die back to the ground like herbaceous peonies. Tree peonies are woody, deciduous shrub peonies. The roots remain dormant under the soil, then the plant stems push up in the spring. Herbaceous peonies are perennial peonies that die back to the ground each year. This article is specifically about growing tree peonies. Add terms like tree peony, itoh peony and herbaceous peony, and it can seem overwhelming. An alternative that sometimes works is to dig up a piece from the edges of the clump. With so many varieties of peonies available these days, selecting the right peony for your garden can be confusing. However, be aware that the transplants may not bloom for a few years as they're getting established. Many gardeners lift the entire clump and use a clean, sharp knife to divide it into sections so that you have several roots and three to five eye buds (they look like little upright pink nubs) per piece. Use a digging fork or garden spade to lift up the plant in mid fall. Unlike some perennials which need divided every year or two, peonies don't really need divided for decades unless you want more plants or if they become overcrowded or too shaded by nearby trees. Cut them in the morning when they're full of moisture. Instead, snip them when they're at the marshmallow stage: the bud has some color and feels soft, not squishy. If they're already open, they'll last only a few days. It's best to cut peonies at a certain stage for longest bloom time in the vase. Cut your peonies for vases when they're in the "marshmallow" stage. Just rinse your flowers or shake them off if you plan to bring them indoors. The ants simply are busy collecting the nectar from the buds. Do peonies need ants to flower?Ĭontrary to popular belief, peonies don't need ants to flower. You will do better in the spring with potted plants. You can also plant them in late April or early May, though they might lag in growth compared to those planted in the fall. September is the best month to plant peonies, especially bare root plants. Remove and toss any dropped foliage from beneath any kind of peony. Following the first hard frost in fall, cut back herbaceous peonies to the ground. After the blooms fade, cut off the spent flowers so they won't put energy into developing seed pods. Water well and then during dry spells the first two years.įor tall or heavy peonies, you may need to add stakes to keep the flowers upright. You may get them, but many peonies take a year or two to get established before blooming. Also, don't expect flowers the first season. It's fine to add a slow-release 10-10-10 fertilizer to the hole, if you like. For potted peonies, plant in a hole about twice the width and the same depth as it is in the pot. If you plant too deeply, it will not flower. Here's what else you need to know about how to grow peonies.įor bare root plants, plant the tuber about one to two inches below ground. It's best to plant bare roots in the fall, but if you purchase a potted peony earlier in the season, get it in the ground right away to enjoy it amongst your other summer flowers. (They grow best in USDA Hardiness zones 3 to 8.) You'll find them sold as both potted plants and bare roots, which means they have no soil attached. But every year for about three weeks, I get to have big, fluffy white and fuchsia peonies in my life."īecause peonies need a period of cold with temperatures below 40 degrees for a minimum of six weeks, they won't grow in hot climates. "Big John has since retired and he and his wife have moved away. That's the case on the Drummond ranch, too, where Ree enjoys a plot of "beautiful, fluffy peonies, planted at our homestead many, many years ago by the wife of Big John, the longtime cowboy of the ranch," as she says. (Yes, you read that right!) No wonder they have been popular since Victorian times and are often passed down from generation to generation. These perennials are not difficult to grow in your garden and can live for up to 100 years. Peonies are one of the most gorgeous blooms of late spring and early summer, with their exquisite, lush petals and vibrant colors. This is actually a “print” format and not a “save” format.
